We started working on a design that could make the most of the strengths of UHPC, the material of our partner, AJU Corporation, during this fair. We saw the potential of UHPC as a material for high-quality bathroom furniture products since it is more durable than general concrete and more favorable for molding because of its high fluidity. In addition to its advantage of high molding capability, we thought about how we can offset the disadvantages of other conventional bathroom sinks with the advantages of materials and manufacturing methods. In general, ceramic sink basins have a shallow or curve-less bottom surface, where the water falls from the faucet spout. Instead, we designed it in the shape of an ellipsoid so that the water does not splash over the sides of the basin and gets drained naturally. As a result, we tried to create a product based on formative beauty, aesthetics and functionality by dealing with dilemma between form and function.
It was a good opportunity to go beyond solving the problem of moisture, which is the weakest point due to the nature of concrete, and take on a new challenge to apply concrete to bathroom furniture, especially sink basin, which is used directly in contact with water. This project taught me many things while I shared many ideas with the designer to come up with a structure that is advantageous for drainage without causing any inconvenience. We look forward to maintaining a good relationship in the future and building more cases.
I had the opportunity to learn many things while working with a maker with outstanding skills. We constantly talked about the form and function and put our heads together so users can make the most of the product. We hope that UHPC, which has unlimited potential, is promoted more broadly and applied to various fields in the future.
