Incorporating Korean Traditional Beauty into Furniture Made of Leather and Metal
2021-10-12705

Designer Gyomyung Shin and Somar came together to design furniture and décor items with a motif of Korean traditional landscape painting. The basic design of the landscape painting series is based on square-shaped aluminum and organic leather. Mountains are drawn on a metal canvas with leather, and it looks like a landscape painted with an ink and wash technique. The leather is fixed with a flat frame, and the frame presses the leather down. The wet molding method makes each leather piece unique as each leather piece has a distinct shape. The hollow part that looks like a mountain allows you to store small items.

Designer Gyomyung Shin who create artworks based on engineering and crafts said that he was fortunate to meet a maker who could wet mold leather when he wanted to make furniture that combines metal and leather. He added that he tried to create a design that goes well with metal by making the best use of the characteristics of wet molding. Somar CEO Ara Kim said that she wanted people to feel familiar with leather by making a long-lasting but practical leather product. She added that she was able to make furniture that comes with a combination of metal and leather, and this opportunity helped her study more about the wet molding technique.
