A small table designed with a thin structure made out of wood
2021-09-28737

archeology Designer Seungju Chang, who designs architecture, interior and space and makes furniture, and BORI Studio CEO Sunghyun Shin, who mainly makes furniture, came together to work on a collaboration for the DDP Design Fair. This year’s product is a small table designed to transcend the limitations of wood, a difficult material to build a thin structure that is usually expressed with materials like metal or acrylic. The board made by laminating processed solid wood is extremely thin and has been processed into a curved surface to have a stable structure and rigidity. It is a simple object with no frills, and the shape best represents its unique personality. We hope that the users of this small table can experience the smooth feel of the curved surface, the agility of the thin board, the lightness in weight which makes it easy to lift, the dark color contrasting with its light weight and the coarse and soft texture of the natural wood grain.

archeology Designer Seungju Chang said that they initiated the project by sharing each of their previous works and thoughts and suggested appropriate materials and production methods based on common characteristics of both sides. As ideas went back and forth, they could come up with designs right away. Throughout the collaboration, they could exchange their ideas and thoughts without any hesitation. Everything went smoothly from the start to the end. It was an interesting experience. He was grateful that they could create a new result by combining each others individuality and knowhow without being one-sided and fulfilling the purpose and intention of collaboration.

BORI Studio CEO Sunghyun Shin said that as a carpenter, designer and artisan, he designs his work all by himself, and he has worked on furniture with his own style so he was at first hesitant to work on a collaboration with someone. He said he tried to focus on production instead of design so he was able to focus more on how to make and express this piece of furniture. He added, “We could complement each other through this collaboration. We tried to play our own part by doing our best without feeling any pressure. I think we could achieve a satisfying result because we worked with each other based on respect.”
