Stools and side tables, the sculptural power of layering

Collaboration: OSOF and Youngjin Cho
2023-11-1649

The “Sedimentation” series is based on the scenario of designing furniture using the land and rocks created by the deposit of waste plastics using a 3D printing machine. The process of stacking and printing various pieces of waste plastic is a process of sedimentation, and the unique texture of the printed result is metaphorized as “layering”. The “layers” produced by additive manufacturing are a reflection of the technical limitations of the process, and it is common to grind or cover them off. However, the Sedimentation series actively uses it as an expressive technique, specifically designing furniture through the process of sedimentation to express the fact that we are currently closely related to the plastic age in everyday life.

Maker OSOF

"It was interesting to see a new approach to technology by giving it an artistic and design story. It's a machine in its developmental stage, so it has a lot of flaws, but I was impressed that they designed it in such a way that its flaws could become its strengths."

Designer Youngjin Cho

"It was interesting to be exposed to new technologies and apply them to design. Also, as the issue of sustainability is becoming more and more prominent, it was meaningful to work on a project related to sustainability."
