The "Tea Object" that leads to good habits

Collaboration: TIETYP and Toyo Gagu Club
2023-10-3167

It was designed to provide a simple way to enjoy the natural flavor of tea leaves that cannot be found in tea bags, without the need for a full tea set. The cup is a combination of a teacup, strainer, and lid that allows you to add tea leaves to the strainer, pour in hot water, and enjoy an instant cup of tea. Although the form of the cup is simple with minimal components, the inside of the cup has a step that looks like a scale due to the difference in the thickness of the outer wall of the cup, which is intended for the user to use the scale inside the cup to determine the appropriate amount of water and to feel the flavor of the tea with their fingertips while washing the cup after drinking. The semi-permanent wooden box is secured with paper, and the packaging is made of cloth so that it can be used as a tea mat. This product is the result of the efforts of a maker and a designer who wanted to create a product that leads to good habits.

Maker TIETYP

"Collaborating with Toyo Gagu Club was an experience that solidified the message I wanted to convey. As I took a closer look at their brand philosophy and talked about 'good habits' with the team, I recalled my own experiences of comfort after drinking tea instead of coffee, which led us to create a tea set with a simple configuration that is just as easy to enjoy as coffee. During the production process, we went through several shape tests to ensure that the joints of the cup, strainer, and lid fit together well before we were able to mass-produce the product. It was a collaborative project, and I enjoyed the whole process of turning each other's ideas into a product."

Designer Toyo Gagu Club

"We carefully searched for the intersection between the philosophy of the brand TIETYP and the formability that Toyo Gagu Club pursues. In the process, I realized once again that the way parts are joined together or the solution to parts with a functional structure can be solved with a design solution rather than a technical solution. I also learned firsthand that different forms require different efficient production methods, and I thought a lot about what is a good form to produce and what is a form that cannot be abandoned for some reason. Through this, I learned that every form needs a clear rationale that makes sense to me."
