Natural landforms we usually see are the traces of layers accumulated over time. Nature constantly creates new shapes through wind weathering, volcanic eruptions and wave erosion. Erosion Project was created with the motif of ”the lines of nature” from these landforms. The bath mat, which was created as a result of experimenting materials such as diatomaceous earth that absorbs water, serve the purpose of both practicality and aesthetics.

Q1 Please tell us about the collaborative product.

The Erosion Project is a product that reinterprets erosion and weathering, which are traces accumulated over time. I tried to create a design that captures the user's time and memories in the medium of a bath mat, which is placed on the boundary between the bathroom and the living room.

Q2 Were there any difficulties during production?

Since I was not familiar with the material, the most difficult part was finding the proportion of diatomaceous earth. I was able to solve this through a lot of sampling.

Q3 Which part did you focus on the most during the collaboration process?

In line with the theme of the event, we focused on the concept of “Beautiful Life”, capturing time and memories in the user's space. In addition, we wanted to visually express the curves of nature created by erosion while giving a comfortable feeling to the user's feet. It was great to be able to create bathroom products, a product category I have never experienced before, in collaboration with COCS designer Park Chaewon.

Q4 How did you feel about the DDP Design Fair?

When people from different fields meet other, they are able to discover problems they hadn't thought of before and solve them in a creative way. It was meaningful to have a new experience through collaboration.

Q1 What made you participate in the DDP Design Fair?

Last year, I learned about the DDP Design Fair through my friends. I always had a thirst for different materials and production methods. I participated in the fair because I thought that my desire matched well with the purpose of the collaboration program of the fair.

Q2 Which part did you focus on the most while designing the collaborative product?

Since we were designing products that ordinary people use in their daily lives, we focused on delivering unintended naturalness and comfort. This direction naturally became an opportunity to discover a motif from the “landforms created by time”. The main material of the product is earth (diatomaceous earth), which absorbs water. This opportunity also allowed me to think about the circulation of nature.

Q3 How was the collaboration process?

I mostly designed ceramic livingware that is fired at a high degree of heat. My previous works and the result of our collaboration have something in common. They both use earth material, but our collaborative product applies new materials and production methods. I think this was a valuable opportunity to try new production methods during the collaboration process based on the maker’s knowledge of materials. It was especially nice to be able to further develop the product from different perspectives. The collaboration was meaningful since we could help each other to grow through trial and error.

Q4 What is your plan after the fair?

Since we are living in a fast-changing world, new things are being created even at this moment. However, there are things that have been around for a very long time, but don't change. We believe in the comfort of things that stay the same. I want to work on projects that can deliver that kind of comfort in the future.
