When you light a candle, a subtle scent spreads across the space. There is a brilliant idea hidden inside the packaging, which expresses the spreading of the scent metaphorically with a gradation of pastel shades. The packaging transforms into a candle holder. Even if you don't have a candle holder, you can assemble the packaging made from flame-retardant paper and use it as a disposable candle holder. Square-shaped candles, which come with four different fragrances, floral, woody, herbal and citrus, look beautiful when they are stacked on top of each other and are more advantageous than round-shaped candles in terms of storage, shipping and inventory management.

They provide not only the convenience to sellers but also the joy of buying a candle and getting a candle holder for free to buyers.

Q1 What made you participate in the DDP Design Fair?

When I develop products for our brand, I've always felt it's too bad I can only develop products based on the brand’s image. Through this opportunity, we tried to look at the brand from the outside and present a new experience based on the collaboration with a designer outside the company. 

Q2 What does collaboration mean to Drawing Candle?

While creating our collaborative product, we had a lot of discussions about how designers think about the candle market and the future direction of Drawing Candle. It was a meaningful to go back to the basics and learn many things while having new experiences related to manufacturing and marketing.

Q3 Is there any recent trend or issue reflected in this product?

The gift market is growing, as it has become easier to send and receive gifts through online platforms. Thus, more and more customers are purchasing candles as gifts. In line with this trend, we unveiled Square Candle, which can be used alone without the burden of purchasing other accessories for the candle.

Q4 What is Drawing Candle expecting from the fair?

More synergy is created when people meet and communicate with each other, so I thought the most attractive part of the fair is that I could meet other creators in person and see collaborative products at the fair, and I really looked forward to this. What I was most looking forward to was the opportunity to meet various consumers and introduce our products to them.

Q1 Is this your first time participating the DDP Design Fair?

Last year, I participated in the exhibition since I was selected as a young designer for the DDP Brand Product Development Project. This year, I am participating in the fair through the matching process between designers and makers. It seems that I have a special relationship with DDP.

Q2 Could you tell us about the direction of this collaborative product?

I was able to discover various design elements from the perspective of production and commercialization by visiting Drawing Candle’s factory and making candles myself. We wanted to create a shape that could best represent Drawing Candle’s technique of blending candle colors in a natural way. At the same time, we proceeded with the design with the goal of researching a packaging structure that can be recycled. It was initially planned in the form of a triangular prism but was changed to a square pillar for the convenience of mass production and structural stability while developing a product prototype. Our collaboration has been a journey of trial and error and problem solving, which eventually led to an interesting result.

Q3 Is there any particular trend reflected in this product?

These days, there are many designs that not only focus on the product use but also consider the overall product cycle from production to disposal. In this context, I thought it would be better if the candle packaging could have a purpose other than simply protecting the product, so I incorporated this idea into the design by adding the function of a “candle holder”.

Q4 We’ve heard this is your first collaboration based on the matching process. Did you face any difficulty during the collaboration?

Nothing was a problem. It was great to be able to experience the candle production process. Through this project, I was able to understand that the product’s finishing quality varies depending on the mold type, and the expertise of Drawing Candle CEO was truly helpful during the process.

Q5 What is your goal after the fair? 

First of all, there are a lot of issues related to mass production, so I hope we will be able to work things out. Furthermore, I hope I can make my name known to the public and clients as a designer through this fair and carry out a lot of fun collaboration projects in the future.
