This product is an upcycling stool project using scrap flooring, and it is carried out along with a project to build a healthy community by regenerating an underdeveloped accommodation facility in the city into a Guerilla House, a co-living house for single youth. Flooring, a representative finishing material that composes the floor, can be reproduced as an aesthetically complete product because there are various patterns and types. It secures structural rigidity by holding the frame with a wooden rod and woven the floorboard in a weaving method and actively uses the physical properties of the floorboard. The stool is manufactured as a modular system for one person, and has the possibility of expanding to a multi-person table through repetition of weaving.
We focused on 'waste plastic (vinyl) flooring' material. The flooring is a material representing not only the space of an inn, but also a sedentary lifestyle, and it is already widely used as a finishing material for low wooden benches, so we thought that its utility as a finishing material for a chair was proven. In addition, we discovered the possibility of producing a product with aesthetically pleasing quality due to the variety of patterns, and the possibility of producing a variety of series by combining with other materials. We are researching a construction method in which the flooring is woven into a frame by using the characteristics of the flooring that can be easily bent and folded, and a method in which the flooring itself has structural rigidity without an auxiliary frame and can be used as a chair. From the perspective of urban regeneration, I want to deliver a healthy message to the local community by regenerating old spaces and designing products using waste materials.
In the process of completing the product, I received help from the Guerrillas in various ways. It was a precious opportunity to trust the power of collective intelligence, and that close communication and self-motivation are very important elements in design and especially in collaboration. This work focuses on upcycling and the outbreak of communities in order to clarify the purpose of the space where the product will be located and the social message we try to express, and we tried to maximize the physical properties of the plastic (vinyl) flooring that imitates wood and wood patterns.
The collaboration process was quite fun, such as suggesting ideas in areas I didn't think of, working in a field that I was not interested in at all, and working on design with the process of that field. We were able to overcome difficulties through countless communication, and we were able to develop prototypes while overcoming difficulties in smooth communication during the whole collaboration process.
