The 'Archiving Tray', which is a
three-tiered stack of trays of different heights, gradually composed the
density and size of the ink to realize the theme of 'archiving time' in the
production method and user experience. The tray, in which the overlapping of
time is expressed with visual depth, is made by layering more than six layers
of hanji (traditional Korean paper) to create a large disk and then cutting it
to a standardized size, a system that increases the strength of the product
while revealing the material texture of hanji. The hardness of the compressed
hanji clashed with the perception of hanji as soft and fragile, adding interest
to the material. By drawing out the durability of the traditional craft
technique of layering, joomchigi, as a strength and systematizing it for mass
production, the tray conveys a special feeling that will not grow old for a
long time.
Maker Eundam Studio
"By systematizing the production
process from the traditional handmade production technique of coating Hanji on
the structure of the tray to a production method using only Hanji, we were able
to study a streamlined and highly productive production process. It was a great
opportunity to try new techniques."
Designer Chaeyoung Lee
"It was interesting to highlight the
handmade aspect of hanji, a traditional Korean material, and to study it as a
design product that can be mass-produced. It was also beneficial to expand on
the material's strengths of natural texture and durability."
