Rechargeable LED table lamps made from
leftover leather from factories are the result of serious collaboration between
designers and makers. They wanted to show that leather scraps, even the
smallest ones, which are usually landfilled or incinerated, can be used as a
wonderful material instead of being thrown away. After sorting the scraps by
color and shredding them, the prototypes were made without bonding and using
natural materials to shape the waste leather so that even the rejects could be
used again. We hope that everyone will enjoy and love the bright, cheerful
colors and interesting textures of the surface created by the collection of
discarded hides.
Maker Hit Lighting
"Before matching with the designer, we
agreed on the designer's material utilization and wanted to develop new
products with materials that are currently discarded due to social and ethical
issues. Although it was unclear whether it could be mass-produced, and there
were difficulties due to the different physical properties and approaches from
commonly used materials, we were able to create results with the help of the
designer. As a first step, we hope to make a small positive impact on society
and the environment by using eco-friendly materials in future product development."
Designer Yeonji Workshop
"It started with a personal curiosity
to see what could be made from discarded scrap leather. Lighting was something
I had never tried before and didn't know much about, so I took a lot of advice
from Hit Lighting. It was a lot of communication, a lot of anxiety about an
unfamiliar process, and a lot of learning and fun as we worked out the
parameters of processing the scrap leather and making the lights."
